Review: Rurouni
Kenshin 16 - Son of God
Audio:
After watching the show throughout in English, I went back
and re-watched it in its original language of Japanese. I didn’t notice
any dropouts or distortions anywhere throughout either of the tracks. The
amount of directionality was reasonably pleasing, especially coming
through again in scenes of fast movement. The majority of the dialogue was
centre channel based, but it found itself moving to the sides at occasions
when the characters did.
Video:
Overall the quality
wasn’t too bad, typical of most of the Kenshin releases to date. There
were a few artefacts about the place and a few rainbows too. There were a
couple of instances of bad aliasing, but it didn’t reflect through the
whole show. A typical Kenshin in terms of video quality.
Packaging:
Three of the main
characters from this new Christian saga take the cover for this volume. At
the front standing out the most is Magdalia. Kenshin and Shogo Amakusa are
standing behind Magdalia’s billowing dress, looking out in different
directions. The back cover provides the usual screenshots and show
synopsis whilst the inside has a double-sided promotion for RahXephon.
Menus:
The menu starts off as
usual with the samurai relief before the new menu scheme for the Meiji arc
comes into action. A bar comes out from the left with the options on it
and the picture from the cover appears on the right as the music from the
Kyoto menus plays in the background. All content is easy to get to and
access times are always nice and fast.
Extras:
Six pages of Linear
Notes are our first extra for this volume. This is followed by just under
two minutes worth of the usual dub-outtakes; unfortunately these are the
usual boring ones, nothing really to get excited about. We have a new
Creditlessng also, this is almost the same as the oldng except
it replaces all of the Kyoto characters with the new ones from the
Christian Saga. The last extra is the Madman Propaganda which has the
trailers for: Spirited Away, Samurai X – Reflection, Ghost in the Shell,
Armitage – Dual Matrix and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Content:
Finally getting back into some story and away from the
terrible filler episodes that were on volume 15, the new Christian Saga I
thought not to be as bad as I had heard.
private health insuranceThe story begins with our group receiving a letter from Misao
explaining that a rich government official had been murdered and that he
wasn’t the only that had been, but quite a few others as well. One
politician turns up at the Aoiya asking that Aoshi protect him, he
declines saying he is not willing to fight for him. Misao decides to go
and investigate later that night, when Aoshi learns of this he sets out to
look for her immediately. Misao discovers that the politician had been
murdered and gets a glimpse of the killer, but just as Aoshi arrives, she
gets blinded by a mysterious technique from the man.
Aoshi summons Kenshin and his friends to Kyoto immediately
and tells them that the man who has been killing people is a user of the
Hiten Mitsurugi Style. Kenshin heads off to his master where he learns of
a man who trained under Hiko’s master before Hiko himself, a man who
failed to master the Amakakeru Ryu No Hirameki and supposedly died that
day. However that man, Hyouei, lived and decided to teach the techniques
to his nephew Shogo who already possessed godlike speed by the age of 14.
Slowly gathering all the facts they need, the group set off
to investigate and seek out Shogo. Misao does the investigating, Sanosuke
falls for a pretty woman called Magdalia and the others look for Shogo.
Eventually we discover that the Christians are calling Shogo the Son of
God and that a big plot is underway to boost him into being a saviour for
the Christians of the country.
Overall the story doesn’t hold a flame to the
great Kyoto arc, but that certainly doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable
because it sure was. I had heard many bad things about the post-Kyoto arc,
but if they continue in a manner such as this I wouldn’t say they were
true at all. I’m looking forward to checking out some more of the
Christian saga on the next volume!
