Anime DVD
Review: FLCL - Fooly
Cooly 2
Audio:
After watching the shows both in its original language of
Japanese and its English dub, I could notice no distortions or dropouts
with either track. Both of these tracks make excellent use of the forward
soundstage, showing the true use of Dolby 2.0 and how it is meant to be
used in anime. There is also a Japanese directors commentary and a
voiceless audio track present (this contains music and general sounds but
just misses the dialogue).
Video:
As with the first
volume, the picture is simply stunning for this volume as well. All I can
say is, after watching this show my opinions of digital animation have
risen greatly. The only negative thing I can point out about the video in
the show is aliasing which can be seen about the place, though
unfortunately aliasing seems to plague all animation so the video still
rates bloody highly in my books.
Packaging:
Mamimi is the
attraction of this cover, bent down with her camera looking towards us.
The background is pink and as before it’s a sketch drawing. The rear
cover gives plenty of screenshots and information about the two episodes
on the disc as well as information about the disc itself and the extras on
it. The fully reversible cover on the inside is totally blue with a
picture of Ninamori. Its unique and works well with the idea of the show.
Menus:
This menu follows the
same style as volume one except uses different colours, this time pink to
match the cover. One of the songs from the show plays in the background,
and as there are no transitional menus access times between the menus is
nice and fast.
Extras:
Not as many as the
last volume, but still enough extras here to give this volume top marks.
Firstly is the booklet, which at 16 pages gives plenty of little facts
that are quite interesting. The next extra not located in the extras part
of the DVD is the Directors Commentary, which is available from the setup
area and contains English subtitles. In the extras section we have a
Poster Art Gallery that has six pictures from Japanese related FLCL
releases, an Australian trailer, a Japanese credited closing, cast
profiles of Mamimi and Ninamori and the usual Madman Propaganda.
Content:
Another two FLCL episodes and another hour of joyous
entertainment…
The first episode on the disc revolves around Ninamori, the
class president. At home Ninamori’s father has been having an affair with
his secretary. It’s on the news and the family is in turmoil, however
Ninamori acts as if she doesn’t care and tries to behave normally. At
school she is starring in the main role in the schools play and has Naota
playing the cat, much to his opposition. You see, Naota himself has grown a
pair of real cat ears and is forced to wear a rather unfashionable beanie,
so the idea of being the cat is even more painful to him. When Ninamori
discovers his secret, she blackmails him into playing the cat, but still he
will have none of it. Pretty straight story you might think? But then a
machine sprouts from Ninamori’s head and Naota and Canti are called back
into action.
The second episode has Haruko playing for the opposition in
the baseball league, Naota’s father acting strange with Haruko and a
strange man with large eyebrows who seems to be up to no good… A strange
object is falling down on the earth and the mysterious man with the large
eyebrows seems to work for an organization that wishes to stop Haruko and
the object that is going to strike the earth. When Naota’s father turns up
dead and it turns out everything is not what it seems, will Naota be able to
swing the bat?
As satisfyingly strange and wacky as the first
two episodes, these two episodes shine brightly and I think I might even
prefer them to the first volume. Its wacky, it’s insane and in some parts
its just plain stupid, overall all the random things in anime I dislike,
however put together to form FLCL and I love it. This series is rockin’ my
world and my only regret about it is I know there is just one volume to go.
Highly Recommended!
